How to make an ID photo

Step 1

Pick a photo size

Choose a country preset - US, UK, Schengen, China, Japan and more - or type your own dimensions in millimetres or pixels. The tool sets the aspect ratio and output resolution for you.

Step 2

Upload a photo

Any JPG, PNG or WebP up to 10 MB. A front-facing photo taken in daylight against a plain wall gives the cleanest background removal.

Step 3

Adjust position and background

Use the zoom and arrow controls to place your head inside the guide box, then pick a background colour. White suits most passports and visas; some authorities require blue or red.

Step 4

Download JPG or PNG

Save a JPG for printing and online forms, or a PNG if you need a transparent background. The file is already at the exact pixel size and 300 DPI the spec requires.

What makes an ID photo acceptable

Requirements vary by issuing authority, but these are the properties almost every passport, visa and ID photo has to meet.

Front-facing, head level.

Look directly at the camera with both eyes open. Tilted or three-quarter angles are rejected by most authorities.

Head fills a set fraction of the frame.

Usually 50-70% of the photo height, measured from chin to crown. The tool draws guide lines for the size you selected.

Plain, evenly lit background.

White for most passports and visas. No patterns, no other people or objects, and no shadow behind your head.

Neutral expression, mouth closed.

Smiling is rejected on most official documents. Keep both eyes visible and your expression neutral.

Taken recently.

Six months is the usual limit, and the photo has to match how you look now.

Sharp and unaltered.

No filters, no retouching, no red-eye removal. Even lighting with no shadows across the face.

Why ID photos get rejected

The failures that account for most rejections - all avoidable before you upload.

Wrong size or orientation.

Submitting 35x45 mm where 33x48 mm is required, or a portrait crop where a landscape slot is expected. Match the size your form asks for, not the one you used last time.

Wrong background colour.

White is standard but not universal. Malaysia requires blue for passports, Indonesia requires red, and some employers and schools specify their own.

Too little resolution.

Starting from a photo where you are far from the camera means the crop has to be enlarged, and the print comes out soft. Aim for at least 1000 pixels on the shorter side.

Glasses, hats or shadows.

Glasses have been excluded from US passport and visa photos since 2016 and are refused by most other authorities. Headwear is allowed only for religious or medical reasons, and a shadow behind your head is a rejection reason on its own.

Frequently asked questions

Is Easy ID Photo free?▾

Yes. Every size and background colour is free, with no signup, no watermarks and no hidden fees. You can make as many photos as you need.

What photo sizes can I make?▾

Passport, visa and ID photos for the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, the Schengen area and more, including 35x45 mm, 2x2 inches, 1x1 inch, 33x48 mm and 45x35 mm. You can also enter a custom size in millimetres or pixels.

Which passport photo size should I pick?▾

Most countries use 35x45 mm (413x531 px at 300 DPI), including the UK, Australia and the Schengen area. The US uses 2x2 inches (600x600 px). China uses 33x48 mm and Canada uses 50x70 mm. Pick your country preset and the tool sets the right one.

What happens to my uploaded photo?▾

The photo is sent to the server to remove the background, then returned to your browser. Nothing is stored on disk and we don't keep a copy.

Can I change the background colour?▾

Yes. Choose white, blue, red, grey or any custom colour before you download. White suits most passports and visas, but check what your application asks for.

Can I use a selfie?▾

Yes, if it is sharp, front-facing and evenly lit against a plain background. Get someone else to take it if you can - an arm's-length selfie distorts your features and often fails the head-size check.

What resolution should I use?▾

300 DPI is the standard for printed passport and visa photos, and it is what the tool exports by default. If a form gives you a pixel size instead, match it directly - pixel dimensions and DPI are independent.

Can I print the photo at home?▾

Yes. Print at the exact size on matte or glossy photo paper, and turn off any "fit to page" scaling in your print dialogue - a photo printed at 95% scale will be rejected. Plain office paper is too thin and is a common reason home prints are refused.

How do I know which size I need?▾

Check the application form or the document you are submitting to - it will state the size in millimetres, inches or pixels. If it only gives a slot shape, portrait means 35x45 mm and landscape means 45x35 mm.

Can I reuse one photo for several applications?▾

Only if the specifications match. Sizes differ between countries, and some authorities require a specific background colour even when the dimensions are the same. Make one photo per application.

Do I need to sign up?▾

No. Just open the tool, upload a photo and download your result. No account, no email, nothing to install.
